Après des études de droit à Dijon, il se rend à Angers où il s’initie aux mathématiques et à la physique. De 1730 à 1732, il voyage dans le sud de la France, en Suisse et en Italie, en compagnie de deux Anglais. A son retour, il revendique l’héritage de sa mère qu’il fait fructifier grâce au succès de ses ouvrages mais aussi par des investissements agricoles et industriels (en 1767, il se lancera même dans la metallurgie). A la mort de Dufay, l’intendant du Jardin du roi, il est choisi pour le remplacer. En 1714, il perçoit un très riche héritage.
Bibliography
LEJ Rouen Son Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière a été publiée par l’imprimerie royale de 1749 à 1789, en 36 vol. in 4°. Elle se décompose en quatre séries : 1. Théorie de la terre, histoire de l’homme, histoire des quadrupèdes (15 vol., 1749-1767). 2. Histoire naturelle des oiseaux(9 vol., 1770-1783). 3. Suppléments à l’histoire naturelle (7 vol., 1774-1789, le dernier vol. ayant été publié par Lacépède après la mort de Buffon). 4. Histoire des minéraux et traité de l’aimant (5 vol., 1783-1788). Du vivant de l’auteur, outre l’édition princeps in 4°, six éditions furent publiées. On compte en tout 52 éditions de l’Histoire naturelle complète en français, 8 en allemand, 4 en anglais, une en espagnol, une en néerlandais et plus de 325 éditions partielles en diverses langues.
