Il est place chez son oncle au collège de Molsheim, puis fait sa théologie à Paris, collège de Laon (sulpiciens). ordonné prêtre, nommé chanoine et archidiacre de Lassois par Mgr César Guillaume de La Luzerne; émigre en Suisse durant la Révolution. De retour à Langres, vicaire de la chapelle de l’hôpital. En 1801, il est curé de Saint Pierre, puis renvoyé par le nouvel évêque de Dijon (anc. constitutionnel), devient vicaire général de l’évêque de Troyes, et joue un grand rôle comme directeur de conscience. Ces premières publications, en latin, datent de 1797. Ouvrages traduits et réédités jusque dans les années 1880.
